I love the colors used in this episode of Color Theory. As usual, I gained my inspiration from an album cover. Purples and pinks are so fun to design with, but I decided to throw in a pop of yellow. As opposing colors on the color wheel, they contrast each other perfectly. Mix in a few other colors of course, especially some neutrals, and you’ll have a powerful color palette that will bring a ton of personality to any space.
Let’s talk color. Emma + Chelsea have a great post on color if you want to learn the technical stuff they teach in design school.
Color can be really easy, while complicated at the same time. But, the most important thing is to have fun with it. One way to make it easier is to look for inspiration everywhere, paying attention to how colors work together and what you like about them. Personally, I love album covers. I also love book covers and movie posters, but album cover designs tend to be a little more abstract. They play with colors and graphics in a very fun way.
In design school there was a class devoted to color theory and it was awesome. We got to play with this weird material (I couldn’t remember what it was called even when I was in the class). We got messy as we played around mixing the colors while we understood how they worked together. But, it wasn’t until I got my first design job when I really started to have fun with color. Now, I can’t stop….
