Let’s talk about IKEA and my home… I love Ikea, it’s been an awesome way to achieve the modern look I’ve wanted, without spending too much money. That being said, I had to do a bit of hacking to get the specific look I wanted for our TV wall (above). I purchased some of Ikea’s basic pieces and hacked them to get a more specific look.
You can change the look of any Ikea product and add a unique to your home just by adding some paint, new hardware or additional pieces (like my wood top).
I purchased two 2-door Besta system cabinets with a matte finish and no feet. I placed them on the floor together to look like one long console. Then, I added a custom wood piece to the top for a more finished, sophisticated look.

- Make sure you know the look you want before going shopping at Ikea. There’s lots of products to choose from that could be very distracting and then you’ll end up with something other than what you originally planned for your home.
- Before beginning any Ikea hack, you should know that when it comes to their combination series, it’s best to go shop in person rather than online. There’s too many pieces, variations and finishes to deal with.
There were two problems I encountered:
- I couldn’t find a wood piece at any hardware store long enough, thick enough and deep enough. Which is why I had to get the top custom made, making the hack a little pricier than I originally planned. Luckily I know someone who works with wood, but it was still $200. This extra cost was worth it though because the look I wanted could only be achieved with one long seamless piece.
- The hack project would have worked perfectly if my wood floors were level so I wish I would have paid more attention and I could have created a solution beforehand. Now, I just have little cardboard pieces under a couple corners.
At the end of the day, I still achieved the exact look I wanted while saving a lot of money and for that, I love Ikea hacks!
